Diplomacy : DIFFERENT IS NORMAL
Commissioned to work on designs for fashion brand Diplomacy. I was given extensive freedom with the project in terms of visuals, with the main theme being the “Different is Normal” tagline. I used my own interpretation of what that phrase meant to me to guide me in the design process. It brought me to creating visuals that required the viewers to look at the details in the design and find elements that were either hidden, obscured or presented in atypical ways. To me this was at the heart of different being normal. Seeing things differently and taking the time to fully take something in to truly appreciate its meaning. The upside of all this were designs that demanded more attention and rewarded you for doing so. Who wouldn’t want to wear that? Several designs were created with the one showcased here being the winner.
Memory
Constructed from over 20 photos and custom textures, Memory was my first foray into digital collage. Memory was selected as a showcase piece by OCE Canon, to help debute their 2.5D printing technique at the 2014 3D Print Convention held at the Louvre, in Paris.
The Girl and The Wolf
The Girl and The Wolf began life as a short story I wrote which played on classic fairy tale tropes. As most of those stories have been historically accompanied by illustrations I wanted to create something that encompassed the entire story in a single image. The result is a collage that blends photo assets with custom graphical textures and incorporates the use of negative space to define images just as much as the graphic elements.
Third Eye
Third Eye started as a freelance request for a unique visual to go along with an article that described a writers time spent at an ashram. The article was never completed, but the collage took on a life of its own for me. Third Eye is comprised of photos of objects within my apartment at the time that resonated with some sort of spirituality. The process of manipulating those photos in Photoshop to create a cohesive composition mimicked the internal struggle to find a zen cohesion with our own beliefs. Third Eye was featured during the 2014 Paris Artwalk in Belleville, Paris.
Next Gen
Next Gen was a gift to a friend and depicts him and his son bonding over their favorite past time, videogames. The piece includes photos of the innards of an Atari 2600 and an Xbox 360 (the background), the two systems that represent their respective generations. All of the game characters, stickers, faux wooden game cabinet, and typography are custom made. The videogame characters themselves were created in Illustrator using classic "Pixel Art" techniques, meaning they are actually constructed from individual perfect squares of color. Next Gen was featured during the 2014 Paris Artwalk in Belleville, Paris.
Personal Designs
When I’m not working on a client’s vision of a design, I take the time to work on my own. It’s always great to find new mediums and avenues to express myself and see how those same mediums and platforms influence and change the designs I have in mind. It doesn’t hurt that this inevitably helps me work on other projects for clients who are looking to do the same.
